Welcome

Ed Krol, Professor and Interim Dean

Welcome back to campus, and to another exciting fall term at the University of Saskatchewan!

Navigating the obstacles of university life can be challenging enough without having to actually navigate physical obstacles as well. Thanks to everyone for your patience getting to and around campus and for being understanding when these challenges impact one’s ability to attend and access campus spaces.

This fall the college reflected on the fundamental role pharmacists play in caring for people and communities which resulted in reimagining how we welcome our students into the profession. This year we held our inaugural Commitment to Care Ceremony, replacing the White coat ceremony, to welcome the PharmD Class of 2030. Commitment to Care also reflects our ongoing commitment to reconciliation and recognizes the privilege and responsibility our students embrace as they begin their journeys toward becoming pharmacists. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students and the values at the heart of the profession.

In a further effort to build community with our incoming students, the college worked over the summer to provide “Pharmacy and Nutrition” backpacks for all year 1 students in both programs. I also wish to extend a special thanks to those college members who helped create the ribbon blanket that was unveiled this fall, reaffirming the college’s commitment to reconciliation.

The coming year brings many opportunities, notably, the university’s strategic plan is taking shape and will be shared with the university community in the upcoming months. We look forward to seeing the university’s vision and priorities and leveraging the opportunities provided to enhance our teaching, learning, scholarly work and service to our communities. Stay tuned!

The college experienced our share of transition this year, with our dean and assistant dean of Pharmacy completing their terms (thanks to Dr. Jane Alcorn and Dr. Anas El-Aneed) and the appointment of our new assistant deans (welcome Dr. Allison Cammer and Dr. Robert Laprairie). Thanks to everyone in the college for your dedication, resilience, commitment and creativity in supporting our students, advancing our research, and strengthening our community. The tragic loss of our colleague Dr. Gord Zello reminds us that our strength remains in our collective efforts.

We have accomplished much together, and I know we will continue to take advantage of the opportunities ahead of us. I wish everyone a successful and rewarding fall term!

Dr. Ed Krol, Ph.D.
Professor and Interim Dean

Ribbon Blanket Unveiling

Honouring Indigenous histories and relationships

Faculty, staff, students, and community members came together to recognize the significance of the Ribbon Blanket Project and its role in fostering connection, respect, and reconciliation across campus.

During the gathering, college speakers shared reflections on the importance of Indigenous initiatives and meaningful acts of commemoration. The college also thanked everyone who attended and offered special appreciation to Elder Duquette for participating in and contributing to the event.

The College of Pharmacy and Nutrition's Ribbon Blanket is displayed on the second floor of D Wing, across from Room 2D40. It is one of several Ribbon Blankets located throughout the USask campus.

Its presence offers an ongoing opportunity for members of the college community to pause, reflect, and deepen their understanding of Indigenous histories and experiences. It also reinforces the importance of building respectful relationships and ensuring reconciliation remains part of the college's ongoing work and learning.

USask Open House

Connecting with future students

The University of Saskatchewan’s College of Pharmacy and Nutrition welcomed prospective students at the university’s recent Open House, giving visitors an opportunity to explore careers in pharmacy and nutrition and learn more about educational opportunities at the college.

College staff hosted an information booth on the main floor of the E-Wing atrium in the Health Sciences Building, where they connected with visitors, answered questions and shared information about the college’s programs.

The pharmacy session introduced visitors to the profession and the path to becoming a pharmacist. Current pharmacy students and pharmacists were available to share their experiences and offer insight into the program and career opportunities.

The nutrition and dietetics sessions highlighted the work of registered dietitians as food and nutrition experts. Visitors learned how dietitians contribute to patient care in hospitals and long-term care facilities, support public health initiatives and lead food service operations.

Supporting Healthier Pregnancies

USask Researchers Explore

Expectant mothers are encouraged to take folic acid when they’re pregnant because it helps babies grow and develop. But researchers from the University of Saskatchewan / College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan are exploring whether a different form of folate, called (6S)-5-MTHF, may work better. Unlike FolicAcid, which must be changed by the body before it can be used, (6S)-5-MTHF is ready to use right away. The USask scientists will examine placentas to see if different forms of folate (folic acid vs reduced folates, like 5-MTHF) can be identified in the placenta using imaging at the CLS . If successful in this exploratory stage, the team plans to collect placentas from pregnant women who took either folic acid or (6S)-5-MTHF to see how each supplement affects folate levels in the placenta. They hope to learn whether folic acid leaves behind inactive forms of folate that may reduce the placenta’s ability to deliver nutrients to a growing #baby. The findings could help inform recommendations around prenatal supplements, support healthier pregnancies, and reduce the risk of fetal growth problems.

This research is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
