College of Pharmacy and Nutrition Celebrates PharmD Class of 2030 at Commitment to Care Ceremony

College of Pharmacy and Nutrition

On September 27, 2026, the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition welcomed its incoming Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students at the Class of 2030 Commitment to Care Ceremony.

Historically, PharmD students were welcomed through a White Coat Ceremony. This year, the College reimagined the event to focus on the fundamental role pharmacists play in caring for people and communities, rather than on the presentation of a white coat.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Charity Evans (PhD), Associate Dean Academic, explained the rationale behind the change. “While the white coat has long served as a symbol for some health professions, we recognize that it does not hold the same meaning for everyone. For some individuals and communities, it may be associated with experiences of harm, exclusion, or mistrust within the healthcare system. As a College, we reflected on how the traditional presentation of a white coat can place emphasis on a status, at the risk of perpetuating harm, rather than on the values that truly define the profession.”

The ceremony brought together approximately 400 family members and friends to celebrate the newest cohort of pharmacy students. Throughout the event, students heard from members of the USask and pharmacy communities, were individually introduced, and recited the Oath of a Pharmacist, marking an important milestone in their professional development.

Pharmacy alumnus Azaad Kukha-Bryson (BSP ’14) delivered the keynote address, sharing insights from his career and emphasizing the important role pharmacists play in helping people navigate their healthcare journeys.

In place of a white coat, each student received a beaded lanyard to hold their pharmacy intern badge. Beyond its practical purpose, the lanyard serves as a visible acknowledgment of the presence and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and cultures within pharmacy learning and practice environments.
